Call for Papers

The 26th IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference (RE'18) will host a special track devoted to the presentation of work currently being carried out by RE researchers around the world. We look for short communications (4 to 6 pages) that describe the current status of ongoing research. The goal of the RE@Next! track is to provide a venue to present your work to academic colleagues and potential industry partners and to receive early feedback.
A good RE@Next! contribution will:

  • provide in succinct form the information that you would convey in a seminar about your ongoing research work to a fellow academic visiting your department;
  • present the long-term directions and prospects of your research endeavours;
  • serve as a trigger for establishing new collaborations with like-minded colleagues;
  • lead to a full research paper, to be submitted to next year’s RE conference.

Evaluation Procedure and Guidance to Authors

RE@Next! contributions will be rigorously reviewed by the RE@Next! Program Committee, following the double-blind review format. Evaluation criteria include clarity of the submission, expected interest to the conference attendees, also based on the conference theme “Crossing Boundaries and Increasing Impact”, and novelty and feasibility of the idea. Feasibility, for example, can be demonstrated by a sound, convincing review of well-established prior work, by a pilot study based on a reasonably sophisticated example problem, or by early results from an exploratory qualitative or quantitative study.

Please note that submissions do not need to include a full literature survey (but some pointers should be given where appropriate), and they are not expected to provide final results with a full validation or evaluation. The purpose of the RE@Next! track is to discuss emerging research and provide authors with early feedback to help them in the next steps towards a future submission to RE the following year. Hence, the primary interest of RE@Next! is in timely sharing of current research work and prospects. Papers just containing a research proposal will not be considered.

Submission Instructions

In order to guide the reviewing process, all authors who intend to submit a paper must first submit the title, abstract (max. 200 words) and author information of their paper. Abstracts are used only to point out your interest to submit a paper and to allow the track co-chairs to initiate the search for possible reviewers early in time.

Contributions must describe original work that has not been previously published or is currently submitted for publication elsewhere. Submissions must be written in English and formatted according to the IEEE formatting instructions.

Papers must not exceed 6 pages, including references. Papers that exceed the page limit or are not formatted correctly will be rejected without review. It is acceptable to reference additional content (i.e., data repositories, source code for open source tools, full protocols of empirical studies, etc.) by providing a corresponding URL hosted on an institutional, archive-grade site. Please note that abstract-only submissions will be not be reviewed. Such submissions will be discarded without further notice after the submission deadline.

Same as in the Research track, the 2018 RE@Next! track will use a double-blind reviewing process. The goal of double-blind reviewing is to ensure that the reviewers can read and review your paper without having to know who any of the authors are. It is not about making the authors’ identity undiscoverable.

In order to prepare your submission for double-blind reviewing, please follow the instructions given below.

  1. Omit all names and affiliations of authors from the title page (while keeping sufficient space to re-introduce them in the final version if the paper is accepted).
  2. Do not include any acknowledgements that might disclose your identity. (Leave sufficient space in your submission to add such acknowledgements if the paper is accepted.)
  3. Refer to your own work in the third person, as you would normally do with the work of others.
  4. When providing supplementary material, do this via a website that does not disclose your identity.
  5. Do not make changes that compromise the technical integrity of your work. For example, do not change the names of your own tools, approaches or systems, but when referencing them, do this in the same way as you would refer to tools, approaches or systems created by others.
  6. Remove identification metadata from the PDF file before submission. (in Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can check their presence with File Properties, or Ctrl-D). Microsoft Word users should follow the Document Properties and Personal Information section of these instructions.
